"The curled up legs of a bug on its back."
- Madéleine Flores on streetlights, Tumblr
Ms. Flores is a graphical artist who's work I enjoy quite a bit. She did a quick drawing a few days ago, of an empty street, with the caption above. It struck me as a good example of defamiliarization.

Week 2, Junkyard Quote 2
For any who were wondering, all the blood of a giraffe will fit in a standard size fridge.
- K.B. Baty on Facebook
I'm trying to come up with situations where this would become relevant and/or useful knowledge. So far drawing a blank, but this factoid is so darn fun.

Week 2, Reading Response 1
Although I am not yet done with David Madden's "Abducted By Circumstance", I think I have gotten enough of a feeling for the book's style to briefly comment on a few things.
The way the characters are crafted, both blurry and hyper-focused at once, is quite new to me. I am used to a baseline of detail, with some areas coming into greater focus, and others left shady. I really like how it turns out, and how much room it leaves for expanding on any character as desired. Definitely want to try mimicking it.
One aspect I'm not too happy with is the depth of description on the backdrop. I suppose I would get much more out of the book if I knew the place where it's happening, because as-is it feels very distant, and it's hard to put my eye in there. Perhaps this is part of the book's atmosphere, I'm not sure if it has overall contributed or detracted to its mood.
The stream-of-conciousness style that the book is written in makes it a bit dense to follow. It isn't the first book I've read that did this, but so far it has been the hardest. It has been a rewarding read, though.

Week 2, Junkyard Quote 1
Shooting the sequel before the treatment's even finishedSlow West Vultures, from We Shall All Be Healed (2004), The Mountain Goats
Sanding numbers off the monojects
As our slight returns diminish
We are what we are
Get in the goddamn car
Smiling faces flawlessly rehearsed
We are sleek and beautiful
We are cursed
I found The Mountain Goats while in an A.A.-type support forum, a user linked to one of their songs. This is the second one I heard, and this part of the lyrics stuck out to me. They don't conjure any particularly interesting images, but the timing and position of the words stuck to me.
